" Lessons learned after reading the commencement address of Steve Jobs"
Year 2005 five years ago, Stanford University one of the outstanding universities in United States was acknowledge by invited guess Steve Jobs, the CEO of Apple Computers to be their commencement speaker. It was a remarkable inspirational commencement address especially to the students. His speech, entitled, “ Stay Hungry, Stay foolish”. According to my research, this commencement address was a very big hit and it was talked about in various articles. Lots of readers drop their reactions through emails and now the IT3 USEP students given a chance to spread and heard our insight lesson learning’s through USeP Forums. First thing that captivate my attention is the ‘catchy’ first line- “You’ve got to find what you love,” Job says. Suddenly as we read along, the commencement address is comprised of three stories in life of Steve Jobs.
Steve shared here that when he was a child her unwed mother decided him up to adaptation. Not knowing that the supposedly poster parents changes their minds to accept baby Steve. They might think that Steve is not applicable to live with them since his mother did not been able to graduate in college so with his father also did not finish school in high school. In this scenario, I can conclude that Steve is not that kind of especial, unluckily and less fortunate at that time.
The first story is about connecting the dots. When Steve is 17 without guidance he chooses a college that is expensive as Stanford. Lately he realized that going to school is never been interesting. But he tokes to another school (Reed College) where he got calligraphy class. He found it very interesting. He didn’t have a dorm room. He walks miles just to save money for one good meal. None of these had even a hope for practical living for Steve. He stated here that dots are connected by looking backwards. We should have trust something that happens in our life it may be good and bad. We have to trust to our self. Our skills, talents and knowledge and we have to share these to others, because we cannot live alone. I also learn that we must never let somebody bring us down. We don’t have to look down or even feel hopeless in every failure we have. Life will never be prosperous always. There will always be ups and downs.. Everything is a perception in this world. Stay Foolish. Fear is pointless. It means that if you are person with fear, this will never help you. Change is inevitable. Inevitable in a way that change is unpredictable to come in our lives. If you fear of doing new things or afraid of change, you can never move forward in life. So, stay foolish.
His second story is about love and loss. Steve got fired on his own company at 30. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. Since he loves what his doing, he started a company named NeXT and Pixar not knowing that he felt in love with a woman and suddenly become his wife (Laurence). The most important thing that I ascertain is “Don’t lose faith”. Steve convinced to keep going that was he loved what he did. Though he was replaced in the position of his own company, Steve never stopped to discover and persist to his work and way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. Also in our self, even though we haven’t found what makes us happy, we have to find out and keep looking. Of course, if we already have it we have to be contented living with it. Don’t settle. Don’t be too easily satisfied or settle easily with what we have, what we do and grow comfortable…Always there is room for improvement and growth…Stay Hungry always. Hungry of looking forward for progress after failures. When one door closes, another door opens.
Death is in the third story. “If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you’ll most certainly be right.” This quotation made an impression to Steve Jobs. Because almost everything – all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure – these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Lately in his life he diagnosed a pancreatic cancer. His doctor told him that this kind of illness is incurable and nothing to expect to live longer. Without expectation, the cancer cell has been killed through surgery that in fact it is rare happen. But in spite with this ailment, Steve Jobs never surrender. However, this unfavorably situation give more courage to Steve to continue living with his supportive family. No one wants to die. Yes! That true. We are afraid to face death. No one knows when and where this tremendous situation happens. This story wants to remind us that our time is truly limited. We never know what happen next. So we should not waste our time living with loved of our life. We have to express to our families, friends, relatives that we love and care them. So that if time goes by, when we are facing death no regrets may occur. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. Whatever people may think of you, don’t let them bring you down. Steve Jobs also shared that have the courage to follow what our heart and intuition says and crave for. Intuition is somewhat your perception and awareness.
Steve Jobs as a person is not perfect. He admits mistakes. But these mistakes alleviate the kind of deemed and most influential person he is now. Experiences and failures are instruments or tools to be a better one someday. How I wish to be as good and positive thinker Steve Jobs is. Plan for the best and prepare for the worst, in that way I can handle anything easily. Honestly speaks I am a person who loss faith and afraid of regrets in the end. But this commencement address that Steve Jobs shared, that everything happens for a reason. With all the disappointments other people bring don’t let me bother with them. Believing in my own self, doing what I love and passionate about. Of course, gaining confidence is also essential. Two thumbs up for Mr. Jobs!
